Digitex and Bradford Design

This next project is all about engaging with the outside world. We have been given a list of live briefs to work from and have to pick at least 2 to respond too.

The first brief I have chosen to look at is Digitex:

Please choose from one of the 3 architectural styles:

1. Baroque

2. Georgian

3. 1950's

Study the architecture and lifestyles of the time. Food, homes, jobs, clothes, buildings,
materials etc.
Create a modern collection taking on all inspirations from your choice above.
Wallpapers designs and fabric themes:
Think repeats and huge feature panels. Embracing all the creative freedom offered by
digital print techniques.
Digetex would like too see sketch books stuffed with ideas.. drawings / textures / colours
and cut-outs. Final presentation to be by mood board, finished artwork to scale and
coloured to the palette of the time.

I have decided to go with the style Baroque because I think it best suits my way of working.
After doing soime research into the style, I have decided I want to look into the Italian architecture and lifestyle because this is where the style first originated.

The other brief I have decided to go with is the Bradford design competition:

P2 PRESTIGIOUS TEXTILES AWARD: A printed interiors textile design for the domestic market. The design should be drawn in repeat, using no more than 16 colours and should be suitable for printing onto a 54" wide fabric, by the rotary screen method.

The design should be suitable for domestic curtains, cushions or fabric blinds, and the proposed end use must be clearly indicated.

I have chosen to do this brief because Interior design is my strongest point and with the brief being so open I can really explore into different design ideas.

Conclusion

Overall I am pleased with the outcome of my work. I feel at the beginning of the project I got off to a really good start and had plently of drawing ideas to work from. I wanted to create designs that were inspired from different patterns on man made buildings. I produced a variety of ideas to work from, picking out 4 main deisgns that I wanted to take further into the process element.

I feel this the process element is where I struggled most and can definetly improve on. I picked to specialise into hand screen printing as this is what I enjoy the most and am most skilled in. I felt that throughout the print process I was stuck for ideas and wasnt sure what to do with my designs. Therefore to improve this next time I am going to make sure I have brainstormed ideas and have plentt of options to choose from. In the end my designs came out very well and I used techniques such as foiling and flocking.

When it came to the context part of the project I felt that I did this really well and experimented with lots of different compositions with my designs. With the basic skills I already know on photoshop I was able repeat my designs and show lots of different ways in which my ideas could work from an interior view.

Intentions

Pattern and Design

The project 'Intentions' was based on three main words - Concept, Process and Context. We had to come up with our own concept, specialise in a process to create designs from and then show what our work would look like in context.
Below is the concept i came up with:

Pattern is a word commonly associated with Textile Design. In every piece of work created there will be a form of pattern involved. My main concept idea has started from looking into manmade structures. Most buildings are mainly seen as just geometric shapes however I want to look closely at the detail and decorations involved and create pattered designs that I can work and experiment with.
My main inspiration has come from my own photos. I have taken a number of photos focusing mainly on structures with a lot of pattern and design, which I can then develop into something of my own. I have looked at different wallpapers and interior images, which have influenced me to create my own collection of designs. One other main inspiration has been Matthew Williamson and his unique designs. A collection that particularly caught my eye is selection of 15 prints that are bursting with pattern and colour which catch your eye straight away.
I will be visually researching into manmade structures. I will be taking photos and drawing from my research which will enable me to create deigns that I can develop further. I would like to use my designs in print and experiment with ways of displaying and showing it as a collection. I will be using a range of media and different printing techniques in my work which will enable me to stretch my work further.
I hope to interest audiences such as interior companies which mainly specialise wallpaper or fabric design. I hope to produce work that is individual and will have potential to be used in the interior work.
