Origins - Sleuths, Spies and Lies

When I found out that our first unit was Sleuths, Spies and Lies I was quite excited at the thought of looking into things with more detail and researching into it further.

I chose to base my project around China Town because after looking through the list of words we could chose from China Town stood out much more than the others. I chose China Town because from what I knew already it was all about colour and pattern which is what I am interested in. I also thought this would be a great place to look into in much further detail. After wondering around and taking photos of China Town I did a few sketches to start me off.

For my first workshop I got onto hand processes. I found hand processes quite a struggle mainly because I found it hard to link what I was making in hand processes to China Town. Towards the end of the project I was able to make a bit more of a connection producing some work that represented China Town.

My second workshop I got onto was print. I was really pleased to get onto this workshop because print is the area I enjoy most doing. I also thought that I could produce a really patterned and detailed print from using all the marks and colours from China Town. Overall I enjoyed the print workshop much more than the hand processes because i found it was easier to make the link between the place and unit brief. I also learnt some new techniques I hadn’t heard of before and produced a large scale print which showed a bit of what I learnt and some skills I already had.

Overall I feel I struggled a bit throughout thisfirst unit. I feel the main reason I may have struggled a bit is because I had come straight from A-levels and missed out doing a foundation year. I think I found it quite a leap from A-level to Degree level with all the different parts of the course that go on at once. I also found it hard to connect my chosen word (China town) to the project brief particularly in my first workshop.
