Overall for this project I feel I have produced some samples that will be able to reflect how I have progressed so far. When I first came across the brief for the project my initial expectations were to focus mainly on the opposites of colour against monochrome. However as my work proceeded I feel I focused a bit more on pattern against plain backgrounds. I see this as a positive though because I was able to do more with my ideas and learn more about the way in which I work. For my workshop I chose to do print intermediate, mainly because I enjoy print the most and wanted to explore into using different inks and techniques.
During this project I feel I have improved on what colours to do. I feel this is because after doing some research on colours and overlapping, I knew what colours would work best in a print. For example, when using blue and orange I found that when overlapping the orange over the blue it made a green, making the print 3 colours. However I feel I need to pay more attention on the some other techniques in print and focus on getting them right.
Throughout this project, I have used my sketchbook to analyse some artists and produce some of my own ideas for a design. I have found that looking into some designers such as liberty and designer’s guild has really helped me when designing my own print. This is because I have looked over the designers work and then used and developed it into my own style
As I was doing print intermediate I feel I have learnt a huge amount during this workshop mainly in the media and materials that I explored into. For example, one thing I did was dying fabrics to then print onto. I found this overall made the print more unique and interesting to look at. Another example would be because of the ink I was printing with. Instead of using pigment we used dye inks. I feel overall this gave a more effective and outstanding effect and worked differently on different materials. The techniques I have learnt are definitely ones I want to go back to.
If I were to start this project again I would try and look more into different ways of dying the fabric and using different fabrics because after doing a few samples and seeing the different effects it inspires me to explore into more. I would also try out some more of the techniques as I didn’t get round to doing some of them.
Overall I feel I have achieved quite a lot during this project. Firstly I have learnt about using different fabrics and different ways of dying them, for example tie dye. This then showed me that when printing onto a fabric that has been tie dyed, it gives a more interesting effect. I have also learnt more about using dye to print with and how it prints through onto both sides instead of just showing up on one side. When comparing my work to others in the print room I found that my work was slightly similar to someone to someone else’s in a way that shows we may have looked at similar designers for inspiration.
