Dye

Sampling - Dye workshop

Overall, I feel even though I struggled a bit with this project I have learnt a lot about myself and ways of working. I would usually see my work as quite flat and mainly based around print, however I feel I have experimented more in this project and gained a lot out of it to which I want to take further into other projects.

Throughout my project, I feel I have made the connections between my practice and my research quite well. I started my research by taking random photos to get inspiration and see what I could base my brief around.

Here is one example of a photo I took to get some inspiration for my project. This picture gave me the inspiration to think up of my brief, this being; 'During my last project ‘Ordered opposites’ I mainly focused on the opposite of pattern and plain. I choose to look into the pattern of flowers and have a floral based print which highlighted the pattern of flowers against a plain background. In this next project, I would like to take the colour and pattern aspect from my last project, and look further into this. I would also like to try something new and look into texture. To start my project off I have given myself a set of rules to follow these being; take photos of colour, pattern and texture (like the wildcard task). I then want to use these photos and apply them into my next workshop being dye'

I then used these photos to create my dye samples with by trying to match the look or texture of the picture to a dye technique. I think working from your photos is the best way to get a good result because it Is your own findings and therefore your work is unique.

I feel throughout this project I have found a few self-discoveries about myself that I would like to take further into other projects. For example, I am very used to working on flat surfaces and making my work very 2D, however throughout this project I have tried to make my work more three dimensional. As my project was based on texture I feel I have made really good progress in trying to make my work have different surfaces and different effects to them. I also feel I have made progress through the scale of my work. At the start of my project, my samples were very small as I was used to working on a smaller scale. However, I wanted to develop my work therefore I decided to create larger scale pieces to give my work more variety and show a development.

During this project, I feel I have learnt one main factor, I have realised that the more you experiment, the more you get out of your work. For example, I have been trying out new ways to create different textures and this has resulted in me finding new ways to work therefore getting different and more effective results.

I think I could improve my work in a few ways. Firstly, I would like to involve my contextual resources into my work and look into more artists for inspiration. I feel I would benefit from this a lot because it would then give me more own ideas to develop further with. Secondly, I would like to perhaps work more in the studio because there is more space to work with which would enable me to work on even larger scales.

In conclusion, I think I have learnt a lot throughout this project. I feel that even though I have struggled a bit, I have learnt a lot about ways of working and new ways in which I can work. Throughout the rest of the units, I would like to take what I have learnt and develop it further.
